The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission has approved Ontario Power Generation's plan to build a small modular reactor at the Darlington Nuclear Power Station site.
Former Chairman of the Board of Naftogaz Andriy Kobolev wrote on Facebook that this is the beginning of a revolution.
" Canada has licensed the construction of the first commercially viable small modular reactor using GEH technology. This is the beginning of a real revolution in nuclear energy ," he noted.
Ontario Energy Minister Stephen Lecce said the Darlington Small Modular Reactor will be the first of its kind in the G7.
" The new nuclear facility project in Darlington could create up to 17,000 jobs in Canada during construction, add more than $15 billion to Canada's GDP and generate $500 million annually ," he said.
The local newspaper reported that the province plans to build four small modular reactors at the site. It is part of Lecce’s larger plan to rely even more on nuclear power to meet the province’s growing electricity needs. The plan also includes exploring the possibility of building new large nuclear plants in Tiverton and near Port Hope.
As Apostrophe reported, the project for Ukraine to purchase Russian nuclear reactors from Bulgaria for two power units of the Kherson NPP remains on paper due to corruption .
