EU adopted a sanctions package for human rights protection

The Council of the European Union adopted the EU Global Human Rights Sanctions Regime. The main goal of the new sanctions mechanism is to enable the EU to stand up in a more tangible and direct way for human rights, which is one of the fundamental values of the EU and its foreign policy. This was announced on the official website of the European Union.

The new EUGHRSR allows the EU to target serious human rights violations and abuses worldwide, irrespective of where they occur, whereas existing sanctions regimes focus on specific countries… It targets individuals and entities responsible for or involved in serious human rights violations or abuses worldwide. It can also target individuals and entities associated with the perpetrators,” the announcement on the official EU website reads.

According to the correspondent of ‘Radio Svoboda’ Rikard Jozwiak, the sanctions will enter into force on December 10.

The new EU Global Human Rights Sanctions Regime can ban perpetrators from entering the EU, freeze perpetrators’ assets in the EU, and prohibit any EU resident from making funds and economic resources available to perpetrators

According to ‘Apostrophe’, earlier it was announced that the EU will adopt a new package of sanctions against the Russian Federation and China for the spread of disinformation.
