The European Commission will examine the consequences of the new gas contract between Hungary and Russia

The European Commission will examine the consequences of the new gas contract between Hungary and Russia, European Commission spokesman Tim McPhee announced during a briefing.

I've already asked my colleagues to check the consequences of the contract,” McPhee said when asked by reporters.

It's worth noting that on September 27, it became known that Hungary had signed a new long-term contract with the Russian concern Gazprom for the supply of gas bypassing Ukraine. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine stated that they were disappointed with this decision.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Dmytro Kuleba, in his turn, called the gas contract between Budapest and Moscow a blow to Ukrainian-Hungarian relations. He also said that Ukraine would turn to the European Commission to understand how Hungary's agreement with Gazprom affects the EU's energy security as a whole. Later, on September 28, it became known that Ukraine and Hungary are calling for ambassadors due to the signing of a gas contract with Russia by Budapest.

In addition, Ukrainian diplomats canceled the meeting of the Joint Commission on Economic Cooperation, which was to be held in Budapest on September 29 and 30.

Meanwhile, the head of Hungarian diplomacy, Peter Szijarto, called such an acute reaction Kyiv's interferencein Hungary's internal affairs. He stated that they see no connection between his country's energy security and cooperation with Ukraine as a neighboring country.
