Washington may impose further sanctions against the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline as soon as the beginning of December.
This was stated by former U.S. Ambassador to Germany (1985-1989), who is now managing partner of McLarty Associates Richard Bert, Ukrinform news agency has reported.
"It is really likely that a proposal to impose further American sanctions on any organization involved in the planning, construction or operation of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline will be discussed in December," Bert said.
He recalled that the House of Representatives unanimously voted in favor of the amendments to the U.S. Defense Budget, including sanctions legislation. And he suggested that American congressmen would discuss this issue again in October.
He recognizes that the administration - taking into account Biden's July agreement with Merkel - will seek to veto such a proposal. However. according to Bert, there is not a single politician in Washingtonsympathetic to European energy policy in the context of the Nord Stream 2 project.
It's worth noting that on September 16, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed order No. 545/2021-rp, creating a working group to develop proposals to manage risks related to the construction of gas pipelines bypassing Ukraine and challenges in the energy sector. In particular, the working group is aimed at managing the risk of implementation of the Nord Stream 2 project, which contains direct threats to national security and the security of the entire region.
