The attack on the US Embassy in Baghdad has prompted Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to postpone his trip to Ukraine and a series of other countries.
On Tuesday, the supporters of the Iranian-backed militia group Kataib Hezbollah stormed the US embassy in Baghdad. The siege served as a response to deadly American airstrikes over the weekend. The demonstrators have now begun to disperse.
Mike Pompeo was scheduled to visit Kyiv on January 3 - one day after charge d'affaires to Ukraine William Taylor would leave his post.
The trip, however, was delayed "due to the need for the secretary to be in Washington, D.C., to continue monitoring the ongoing situation in Iraq and ensure the safety and security of Americans in the Middle East," as State Department spokesperson Morgan Ortagus stated.
According to Ortagus, the planned visits will be rescheduled "in the near future".
