Volodymyr Zelenskyy took part in the opening of the 76th session of the UN General Assembly

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy took part in the opening of the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

This was reported by the press service of the head of state.

The speech of the President of Ukraine at the general debate of the UN General Assembly will take place on September 22.

The 76th session of the UN General Assembly is dedicated to combating the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as preserving the environment - several major international forums on climate change and environmental protection will be held in parallel.

The annual general debate began on September 21 and will last until September 27. On the second day of the general political discussion, September 22, a high-level meeting dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action will be held in parallel. A high-level meeting is scheduled for September 28 to mark the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons.

The General Assembly is the main advisory body to the United Nations. It includes representatives of all member states of the Organization having one vote each. Decisions on important issues, such as peace and security or the admission of new members, require a two-thirds majority. In 1946, the General Assembly consisted of 51 states, now the figure is 193.
