U.S. Charged Russian Intelligence Officers: The Creators of NotPetya

The U.S. accused alleged GRU officials of cyberattacks on the Olympic Games, US businesses, and the French election. The hearings of the US Federal Grand Jury were held online, and the corresponding video was published on the US Department of Justice website.

Six Russian intelligence officers have been accused of conducting “the most disruptive and destructive series of computer attacks ever attributed to a single group”. As a result of the actions of hackers working for the GRU of the Russian Federation, several American organizations suffered losses of more than a billion dollars. Such a mass disruption cost billions of dollars by attacking targets like a French presidential election, the Ukrainian energy sector, and the opening ceremony of the 2018 Winter Olympics.

According to John C. Demers, the assistant attorney general for national security, “No country has weaponized its cyber-capabilities as maliciously or irresponsibly as Russia, wantonly causing unprecedented damage to pursue small tactical advantages and to satisfy fits of spite."

The list of suspects includes Yuriy Andrienko, Serhiy Detistov, Pavlo Frolov, Anatoliy Kovalyov, Artem Ochychenko, and Petro Pliskun. All of them are charged with conspiracy to commit computer hacking and fraud.
