Nicolas Sarkozy has become France’s first former president to appear in the dock as he went on trial accused of corruption and influence peddling for allegedly trying to bribe a judge for information.
A trial on charges of corruption and abuse of influence by the former president of France began on Monday, in Paris, France. According to the investigation, he promised the minister of Themis a higher position in exchange for information about the investigation of the financing of his election campaign.
According to police, Sarkozy spent twice as much as the set limit. The fictitious bank accounts were utilized by the Presidents in order to exceed the limit. Law enforcement officials suspect that Sarkozy was funded by Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi.
In addition, except for Sarkozy, his official lawyer is also on trial. Nicolas Sarkozy denies his guilt.
