The European Commission wants to propose measures to ban imports of Russian gas by the end of 2027. They want to move forward on the issue of limiting dependence.
The Head of the Center for Countering Disinformation at the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine, Andriy Kovalenko, reacted to the EU's intentions.
"The European Commission wants to ban all imports of Russian gas, both pipeline and liquefied natural gas, by the end of 2027. They've been going to this for a long time," Kovalenko comments on the European Commission's plans.
Bloomberg, citing sources, reported that the European Commission intends to ban all gas imports from Russia by the end of 2027. EU gas imports have already fallen to 19% of last year's levels, down from over 40% before the full-scale invasion.
Therefore, in order to move further in terms of limiting this dependence, the EU wants to ban all imports - a proposal may be presented in June. We are talking about both new agreements with the Kremlin and existing contracts:
"The EU plans to propose in June a ban on all gas purchases under new deals with Russia and existing spot contracts, which account for about a third of imports, set to take effect by the end of the year, the people said."
The ban itself will come into effect by the end of 2027.
We will also recall that there has been talk in the United States about "devastating" sanctions on Russia and 500% tariffs on Kremlin allies . A key ally of President Donald Trump in the US Senate said he has the support of 72 colleagues on this bill.
