The head of the NBU insists on the introduction of a small "shag" coin in Ukraine

National Bank Governor Andriy Pyshny stressed that Ukraine is now at a stage where society is truly interested in its own language, culture, and history. Therefore, it is important to use the same approach when it comes to monetary sovereignty.

The head of the NBU said this in an interview with NV.

In particular, Pyshny emphasized how important the national currency is for the formation of statehood.

"We know everything about money. Therefore, when the idea arose to tell about it through the language of art, history, and cultural discourse, we realized that this story would go far beyond the technological aspects of the creation of the hryvnia. The story of the national currency is the story of us, of our statehood. About historical figures and circumstances, about how entire eras influenced our formation. This is our achievement," said the head of the National Bank.

And he emphasized that Ukraine is now at a stage where society is truly interested in its own language, culture, and history. He said that it is very important to use the same approach when it comes to monetary sovereignty.

"Here it is appropriate to mention the name of the Ukrainian small coin - "shag". This is a historical, specifically Ukrainian name. And the National Bank calls for its return to modern Ukraine. The symbolism of this decision is much more powerful. We are finally cleaning out everything from Ukrainian legislation that somehow makes us related to Moscow. We are, in fact, finally securing for ourselves, even at the level of the smallest manifestations, at the level of names, monetary sovereignty and monetary independence. This is the final decommunization, demoscovization of monetary circulation," Pyshny commented.

At the same time, Pyshny noted that the implementation of such an initiative would not require any additional expenditures from the State Budget of Ukraine or from the NBU.

In addition, the National Bank does not plan to withdraw coins denominated in kopecks from circulation. The kopecks will be introduced gradually within the planned issue and will be in circulation in parallel with the kopecks.

We will remind you that last October, the National Bank submitted draft laws to the Verkhovna Rada on renaming the Ukrainian small coin .
