The introduction of a UN mission to monitor human rights at the WOT is necessary to uncover the truth. In an interview with Guildhall, Latvian MEP Martins Stakis supported the humanitarian initiative and called for tougher sanctions against Russia and increased comprehensive support for Ukraine.

The parliamentarian said: "Russia's actions, including ethnic cleansing, a murder campaign, torture, mass kidnappings of children and the destruction of Ukrainian identity, must be unequivocally condemned by everyone".

He also noted that back in 2022, the Latvian parliament officially recognised that Russia was committing genocide against the Ukrainian people.

"Russia is flagrantly violating international law and must bear full responsibility for its actions. The only proper way forward is to tighten sanctions and increase political, financial and military support for Ukraine until Russia's war is stopped. Unfortunately, there are signs that some are seeking to return to "business as usual" with Russia and abandon Ukraine to its fate. This is deeply worrying and Europe must not allow this to happen," Stakis additionally emphasised.

"I support the call for a mission to uncover the truth. Ukraine itself is doing important work to document Russia's war crimes - I witnessed this during my last visit to Ukraine - and those responsible must be held accountable," the MP concluded.

We will remind, on 24 June 2025, theParliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe adopted a resolution in which the actions of the Russian Federation against Ukrainians in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine are recognised as ethnic cleansing. According to paragraph 14 of the resolution, Russia is carrying out ethnic cleansing through forced displacement, deportation and forced assimilation of Ukrainians in the occupied territories.
