"The kopeck was imposed on our state by the Russian empire": NBU accused the pro-Russian lobby of disrupting the implementation of the "shag"

The National Bank of Ukraine advocates the return of "shag" coins to circulation, which was prevented by the pro-Russian lobby in the 1990s.

This is stated in a statement by the NBU press service.

The bank reminded that the name of the coin "kopeck", in addition to Ukraine, is also used today in Russia, Belarus, and Transnistria.

" Actually, at one time it was imposed on our state by the Russian Empire. In the 90s, during the monetary reform of the already independent Ukraine, the pro-Russian lobby, unfortunately, prevented the name "kopeck" from finally changing to the specific Ukrainian one - "shag".

"The National Bank of Ukraine proposes to restore historical justice and return the shags to the monetary circulation of our independent state ," the NBU said.

Earlier, NBU Chairman Andriy Pyshnyy stated the need to introduce a small "step" coin in Ukraine.
