The archival photos not only show what the main street of Kyiv looked like in the late 19th century, but also capture a "meeting of epochs" - a horse and buggy and an electric tram that had just started running in the capital were photographed on Khreshchatyk.
The photo was published on the Facebook page "Spraga: it is interesting in Kyiv".
"Khreshchatyk in the 1920s. A combination of old and new means of transportation. A meeting of epochs," the post reads.
It is winter on the photo. A horse and buggy is moving along the main street of Kyiv. A little farther away you can see a car, and even farther away - an electric tram.
The construction of tram lines in some districts of Kyiv began in 1891 and a year later was almost completed. In May 1892, the first two tramcars with electric motors arrived in the capital. On the same day, they were tested on Oleksandrivska Street in Podil, and on May 8, on Oleksandrivskyi Descent (on the line from Podil to Khreshchatyk). On June 9, an official commission tested the electric tram, and on June 13, it began running for passengers on a regular basis.
In 1893, the profits from the electric tram far exceeded the costs of its maintenance, and it became obvious that it had become a leader in the field of transportation. In 1894, lines were electrified along Khreshchatyk, to Lvivska Square, and to the train station. The last line, which ran from Podil to Troitska Square, was electrified in early 1896. The horse-drawn tram lost its relevance on the streets of the city.
