Artisans used to live here back in the days of Kyivan Rus: how Borychiv Tik in Kyiv looked like 60 years ago, photo

Archival photos from the 1960s of Borychiv Tik Street in Kyiv, which is adjacent to Andriyivskyy Descent, were shown online.

The photos were posted by the capital's tour agency "Spraga: it is interesting in Kyiv" on its Facebook page.

This street is located in the Podilskyi District and runs from Borychevyi Descent to Frolivska Street and is connected to Ihorivska Street, Andriivska Street, Pokrovskyi Lane, and Andriivskyi Descent. In the times of Kyivan Rus, in the X-XVII centuries, it was inhabited mainly by artisans.

The modern street appeared after the Podil fire in 1811, which burned down the wooden buildings and "turned the best part of the city into ashes." Borychiv Tik has preserved the manor character of the low-rise post-fire buildings of the early XIX century. Some buildings are on the state register and under protection as monuments of urban planning and architecture.

There are three versions of the origin of the street's name. The first is that it was the name of the historical area of Borych (the Borychiv tract, Zborychev, Borych Mountain, which was also called St. Andrew's Mountain in ancient times). The second is in honor of the ancient government position of borych (biruch, byrucha), or customs officer, because the customs office was located nearby. The third is the name of the voivode Borych, who is mentioned in historical literature.

At the same time, the word "tik", according to one version, is a shortened name for "tovchka" (trading). According to another version, it is a grouping of springs and streams that flowed from under the mountain. It could also mean a place for threshing bread.
