The heads of states and governments of the European Union member states have given political consent to the continuation of economic sanctions against the Russian Federation. Restrictive measures were imposed due to the destabilizing actions of the Russian Federation in Ukraine.
The decision to extend the sanctions was announced by the press secretary of the President of the European Council Barenda Leitso on his official Twitter page.
“At #EUCO agreement on conclusions EU-US relations and the rollover of the sanctions against Russia,” he tweeted.
As it is known, the current package of sanctions is valid until the end of January 2021. Restrictive measures were imposed in 2014 when Russia started armed aggression in Eastern Ukraine and annexed the Crimean peninsula.
The sanctions apply to the financial, energy and defence sectors of the Russian Federation, as well as the dual-use sector. Since then, they prolonged every six months.
It should be recalled that meanwhile, the EU disburses €600 million in macro-financial assistance to Ukraine. Additionally, the United States are ready to provide $ 250 million in military assistance to Ukraine.
