Ukrainian court extends house arrest for pro-Russian lawmaker Viktor Medvedchuk for another 2 months

On July 9, 2021, a Ukrainian court ordered a prominent pro-Russian politician Viktor Medvedchuk to stay under house arrest for another 2 months while he faces allegations of treason in a case that could ratchet up tensions with Russia, Pavlovsky News writes.

The decision on Medvedchuk’s case was supposed to be made yesterday, but the court postponed the announcement till Friday morning on July 9.

With this, after the Pechersk District Court of Kyiv has extended the round-the-clock house arrest, the arrest will last until September 7.

To apply a measure of restraint in the form of a round-the-clock house arrest, banning from leaving the place of residence for a period of up to 09.07.2021 inclusive,” the judge ruled.

As Apostrophe reported, on May 11, Prosecutor General Irina Venediktova signed a suspicion of treason against Viktor Medvedchuk and People's Deputy from the Opposition Platform - For Life! Taras Kozak. They came to his house with searches that day.

The pre-trial investigation is ongoing. On May 13, the Pechersk District Court of Kyiv ordered Medvedchuk to be put under house arrest, and on May 13 he was put on his electronic control device.

On June 24, Ukrainian law enforcement officers again came with searches against Medvedchuk's entourage.
