German Chancellor Angela Merkel is to meet Zelensky in Kyiv on August 22

German Chancellor Angela Merkel will visit Ukraine on Aug. 22 and meet with President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv, according to Mykhailo Podolyak, an adviser to Zelensky’s chief of staff.

This was reported by Kyiv Post.

This information has already been confirmed by the German side,” Podolyak said in a comment to Strana news agency.

The main topics of the meeting between Angela Merkel and Volodymyr Zelenskyy will be the peace in Donbas and the issues of gas transit.

A spokesperson of the Ukrainian President Serhiy Nykyforov has also confirmed the information.

"The Federal Chancellor of Germany, Mrs. Angela Merkel, intends to visit Ukraine on August 22. The topics of the talks: security, bilateral relations, and other topical issues," Nykyforov said on Facebook.

Nykyforov has also confirmed that the topics of negotiations would include security and bilateral relations.

Merkel’s visit comes as Ukraine gets ready to celebrate the 30th anniversary of its declaration of independence from the Soviet Union on August 24, a split that helped trigger the collapse of the communist bloc.

It's worth noting that in July Zelenskyy had a two-day trip to Berlin with an official dinner hosted by German Chancellor Angela Merkel. During a more than four-hour meeting with Chancellor Merkel in Berlin, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy discussed security issues in Ukraine and Europe, including a peaceful settlement in the Donbas and the risks of Nord Stream 2. In addition, during this working visit to Germany, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy has also met with the Minister-President of North Rhine-Westphalia, the head of the Christian Democratic Union Armin Laschet.
