Turkey declared its non-recognition of elections to Russian State Duma held in Crimea

Turkey does not recognize the results of the Russian parliamentary elections, which took place on September 17-19 in occupied Crimea, the Turkish Foreign Ministry said on its website.

"Turkey still supports the territorial integrity of Ukraine and does not recognize the illegal annexation of Crimea. Accordingly, the results of the elections to the State Duma of Russia held on September 17-19, 2021, also in Crimea, in relation to Crimea, have no legal force for Turkey," Spokesperson for the Turkish Foreign Ministry, Ambassador Tanju Bilgiç said.

The Ukrainian administration also objects to Russia's elections in Crimea on the grounds of violation of international law.

Earlier, the U.S.Department of State announced the non-recognition of the holding of the Russian parliamentary elections on September 17-19 in the territories of Ukraine occupied by Russia.

The September 17-19 Duma elections in the Russian Federation took place under conditions not conducive to free and fair proceedings. The Russian government’s use of laws on “extremist organizations,” “foreign agents,” and “undesirable organizations” severely restricted political pluralism and prevented the Russian people from exercising their civil and political rights. European Union reiterated its deep concerns,” Ned Price, Department spokesperson said in a press statement.

We call upon Russia to honor its international obligations to respect human rights and fundamental freedoms and to end its pressure campaign on civil society, the political opposition, and independent media. Furthermore, we do not recognize holding elections for the Russian Duma on sovereign Ukrainian territory and reaffirm our unwavering support for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine,” he added.

European Union also reiterated its deep concerns.

The EU does not and will not recognize the illegal annexation of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol by the Russian Federation, and therefore does not recognize the so-called elections held in the occupied Crimean peninsula. The Russian Federation‘s decision to involve residents of the non-government-controlled territories of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions in Ukraine in the State Duma, regional and local elections runs counter to the spirit and objectives of the Minsk agreements. The EU remains unwavering in its support for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine,” the European Council stated on Monday. September 2021.
