The European Council approved the opening of negotiations on the membership for Ukraine and Moldova. Representatives of all EU leaders voted for this.
This was announced by Charles Michel, President of the European Council.
The European Council agreed to start accession talks with Ukraine and Moldova and granted a candidate status to Georgia. The EU will also start negotiations with Bosnia and Herzegovina when the necessary level of compliance with the membership criteria will be reached.
"A clear signal of hope for their people and our continent," Michel commented on the European Council's decision.
President Volodymyr Zelensky commented on the decision of the European Council to start negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the EU.
"The victory of Ukraine. The victory of all of Europe. A victory that motivates, inspires and strengthens," - wrote Zelensky in social network X.
But Ukraine is waiting for another equally important decision - the allocation of 50 billion euros of macro-financial aid for the next four years.
We would like to point out that in November, the European Commission noted that Ukraine has already implemented about 90% of the planned reforms, and this allowed the negotiation process to begin. European Commission will provide a report on the reforms implemented by Ukraine in March 2024.
