Will Ukraine get the money? The US Congress has reached an important agreement

Republican and Democratic leaders in the US Congress have reached an agreement on spending for 2024.

This is reported by The Washington Post.

Representatives of the two political forces agreed to finance the work of the US government for the current year: it is planned to allocate $1.66 trillion.

In addition, this deal allows the funding of $886.3 billion for defense and $772.7 billion for non-defense domestic spending. The same publication says that Democrats and Republicans have reached an agreement on funding their bills, allowing for a vote in Congress on more than $61 billion in financial aid to Ukraine.

US President Joe Biden said that the deal brought the country one step closer to "preventing a needless government shutdown". However, it is possible that the deal will likely face strong opposition from far-right Republicans in the House of Representatives. They are calling for drastic budget cuts.

The agreement was jointly announced by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Speaker Mike Johnson. At the same time, Johnson, answering a question about funding for Ukraine, said that there are "more important things," according to CBS News.

This refers to the protection of the US border with Mexico, Johnson said. In addition, Republican representatives in Congress want to know what the ultimate goal of Ukraine is, and how responsible the United States will be in spending these resources.

According to Johnson, he and the Republicans have not yet received the necessary information from the White House.

Earlier "Apostrophe" reported that Coordinator of the White House National Security Council said that the USA no longer has sufficient funding to provide Ukraine with new military aid packages.
