Mark Rutte elected as NATO's new Chief

On June 26, Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte was officially elected as the new NATO Secretary General, taking office on October 1, 2024.

Reuters reports.

On Wednesday, NATO member states officially elected Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte as the new chief of the Alliance. Reuters points out that Rutte's appointment became a formality after his only rival, Romanian President Klaus Iohannis, announced last week that he had quit the race, having failed to get enough votes.

It is noted that Rutte will succeed Jens Stoltenberg when the latter's term expires on October 1. The candidacy of the 57-year-old Dutch Prime Minister was supported by all 32 members of the Alliance.

Earlier, we also wrote that the Council of Europe elected Alain Berset as its new Secretary General.
