Many people in the West do not know that «Rosatom» is a state-owned company that plays a key role in supporting and developing Russia's military-industrial complex. It is necessary to expose the company's activities in Europe and other Western countries so that European companies simply cannot afford to cooperate with «Rosatom». And EU countries also need to reduce their dependence on anything «Rosatom» can supply, including nuclear waste disposal services and building nuclear power plants.
Markéta Gregorová, a member of the European Parliament from the Czech Republic (Group of the Greens/European Free Alliance), told Guildhall in a commentary.
«We must realize that «Rosatom» is a state-owned company, not a private one. There are more than 300 companies under the «Rosatom» brand... Many people (in the West, — ed.) do not know about «Rosatom»'s activities at all and that it is not just an energy agency - that it really has tentacles in many different areas. And we have to call things by their names, expose and shame («Rosatom»'s activities, — ed.), show that this is a real problem and that European companies should not cooperate with them. So even if the country does not directly impose sanctions, the pressure should be such that European companies simply cannot afford to cooperate with «Rosatom»», — the Czech MP said.
«And, of course, as in everything that concerns Russia, it is necessary to reduce dependence on everything that «Rosatom» can provide. This can apply even to such seemingly insignificant things as the utilization of nuclear waste in-house or otherwise. If a state or a company in Europe needs «Rosatom», that is already a problem. After all, there are other companies, and there are quite a few of them... There is now an active discussion in the European Union about how to diversify the energy sector. Most are in favor of increasing the share of nuclear power — or, say, a more stable nuclear model and so on. And that, in turn, means that a window of opportunity is opening up for conversations about security. And right now is the perfect moment to do that. We're talking about renewable energy, nuclear power and security at the same time. And we can finally unite these topics», — the politician summarized.
Earlier, the Center for Defense Reform released a report titled ««Rosatom»'s Military Affairs: Production of Nuclear and Conventional Weapons». This investigation provides evidence that «Rosatom» produces nuclear and conventional weapons. Thus, the state corporation Rosatom plays a key role in supporting and developing the military-industrial complex (MIC) of the Russian Federation. At the same time, the international sanctions imposed against it remain limited and fragmented, despite its strategic importance for the Russian military machine. The imposition of comprehensive and coordinated Western sanctions against «Rosatom» and its subsidiaries would be an important step in efforts to contain Russia's military capabilities and global influence.
