From the biography of Oleksandr Dmytriev, it is known that he graduated with honors from the Department of Biophysics of the Taras Shevchenko Kyiv State University, worked at the Institute of Physics of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR, and studied at the postgraduate course of the Institute of Plant Physiology of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR.
In 1974, Dmitriev defended his PhD thesis "Radiosensitization of blue-green algae cells", in which he discovered a mechanism of resistance of blue-green algae associated with the activation of reverse transcriptase.
In 1989, he defended his doctoral dissertation at the Lomonosov Moscow State University.
Since the same year, Oleksandr Dmytriev has been heading the laboratory of the Institute of Cell Biology and Genetic Engineering of the NAS of Ukraine.
In 2006, he was elected a corresponding member of the NAS of Ukraine.
