Due to the ongoing success of Ukrainian Defense Forces in capturing Russian occupiers daily, and Russia's consistent refusal to participate in exchanges or repatriate its citizens from captivity, Ukraine has inaugurated a new facility for holding military prisoners called ‘West-2.’

Camp ‘West-2’ is located deep in the rear, following the guidelines of the Geneva Conventions. The Ukrainian Ministry of Justice has created living conditions that meet international humanitarian standards: individual sleeping areas in large heated rooms, regular hot meals, access to medical care, he ability to send and receive correspondence and packages to and from family. In the near future, IP-telephony for calls home will also be organized here.
Representatives from the Ombudsman's Office and the International Committee of the Red Cross visited the camp before its operation commenced. Much like the "West-1" camp, international human rights groups and the media will be able to visit the new camp for POWs. Ukraine is sticking to its commitments under the Geneva Conventions and underscores this commitment through maximum transparency.
‘We demand the same from the Russian side: allow international observers from the ICRC access to Ukrainian prisoners of war and civilian hostages held in Russia; adhere to the rights of prisoners of war as per the Geneva Conventions and international humanitarian law, ensuring decent conditions of detention; and remove the obstacles for setting up joint medical commissions,’ underscores the message.
Russia is also a signatory to the Geneva Conventions, but, as with many other agreements and commitments, it fails to comply with and adhere to them, state the message.
