Archaeologists have found a Roman villa with many artifacts in the UK.
It is reported by Ancient Origins.
The discovery was made in the village of Grove in Oxfordshire, whose history dates back to the Bronze Age: it was occupied by the Romans from the first or second centuries to the late fourth or early fifth century.
The complex consisted of many buildings, one of which probably had multiple levels.
Roman villas were not just residential buildings, but rather resembled "small administrative centers". They often performed duties such as maintaining roads, overseeing the planning of crops in the surrounding area, and serving as a "safe place" to store food in unstable times. Even in the late Roman period, this particular villa showed constant signs of human activity.
The complex of Roman villas was a building that probably had several levels, its vast territory covering 1000 square meters on the ground floor alone.
Excavations revealed miniature axes and a collection of tiny, tightly-coiled lead scrolls resembling Roman curse tablets, hinted at the possibility of a ritual or pilgrimage having taken place there. Similar items found at other cult sites in England, like Uley and Farley Heath, imply offerings to martial gods during the Roman period. There were other artifacts too possibly used in rituals, including coins, rings, brooches, red clay tableware, and a horse-headed belt buckle dating from 350 to 450 AD, likely worn by military elites.
The architectural features of Roman villas in Britain mirrored those of villas on the continent, with luxurious decorations such as mosaic floors, painted walls, and elaborate frescoes. The layout of the villas varied from simple houses with a courtyard to complex complexes with several wings and pavilions.
