Ancient history and modern scandals: what the Holosiivskyi Desert in Kyiv looks like now, photos

Archival photos of the Holosiivskyi Holy Intercession Monastery of the Moscow Patriarchate in Kyiv from the 1910s were shown online.

The photos were published in the community "Club of Native Kyivan" on Facebook.

On its territory there are St. Volodymyr's Church, the Nikolo-Tikhvinsky Monastery, and the Monastery Theological and Vocational School. Since 1993, Archimandrite Isaac (Andronik) has been the abbot of the monastery.

In 1631, Metropolitan Petro Mohyla built the Church of St. John of Sochava on this site. Later, the Holosiivskyi Desert became the summer residence of the metropolitans. Wooden cells were built there.

After the death of Petro Mohyla, churches were built in honor of Barlaam and Joasaph, but in 1918 the monastery was robbed, and a year later it was transferred to the communal services of the Kyiv City Executive Committee. Later it was transferred to the Agricultural Academy.

After the World War II, the monastery buildings served as outbuildings. All the churches were lost, including the Church of the Icon of the Mother of God "Life-bearing Source" and the Church of the Intercession. In the 1950s-1960s they were dismantled.

In 2019, the monastery, already under the Moscow Patriarchate, provided shelter to Rafael Lusvarga, a Brazilian with Hungarian roots who fought in Donbas on the side of the occupants. He promised to "reach Kyiv and end the war," commanded the "Grad" missile system, stormed Debaltseve, and was wounded near Donetsk airport. Then representatives of the C14 organization and the National Corps party detained the militant in the monastery and handed him over to the SBU.

In addition, the website of the Holosiivskyi Holy Intercession Monastery has no pages in Ukrainian for many sections and materials. Readers are offered to choose the "most understandable language," such as Russian. Also, all the books offered by the monastery's bookstore are written in this language, and there is no option to choose Ukrainian on the store's website.
