The US reassures Ukraine of support after freezing $250 million in military aid

As the world leaders met in Warsaw for events marking the start of World War II 80 years ago, both the US Vice President Mike Pence and Energy Secretary Rick Perry have reassured Ukraine of America’s continued support.

According to Associated Press, Mike Pence met with Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky, discussing Donald Trump’s decision to freeze $250 million in military aid. The US president’s administration has earlier decided to hold up security aid to Ukraine in order to ensure it is distributed in the best interests of the United States.

As Pence noted, America “stood strongly for the territorial integrity of Ukraine” when Russia annexed Crimea in 2014. “We will continue to stand with the people of Ukraine on your security, on territorial integrity, including Ukraine’s rightful claim to Crimea,” the Vice President reassured.

At the same time, the US Energy Secretary Rick Perry stated America is likely to continue increasing its sanctions on Russia, as reported by Reuters.

Donald Trump, who was scheduled to meet with Volodymyr Zelensky in Warsaw, canceled his trip to Poland due to upcoming Hurricane Dorian. President Zelensky, in turn, has expressed his plans to pay a visit to the United States.

As “Apostrophe” reported earlier, Trump has actively lobbied for Russia’s return to G7 during the Biarritz summit.
