In the Ukrainian town of Novi Sanzhary, dozens of protesters have attacked buses with evacuees from Wuhan, China. Amid fears of coronavirus outbreak, Novi Sanzhary residents have even clashed with police.
Yuriy Dzyubenko, one of the locals, was recorded wondering, “Isn’t there any other place in Ukraine that can host 50 people, that is located in more or less remote villages or in far-off areas where there is no threat to population?”
After a tense confrontation and shattered bus windows, police and the national guard managed to ensure the evacuees’ transportation to the sanatorium where they will be spending the next 14 days of quarantine.
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky has assured the residents that the evacuees pose no danger to the community and have been screened for the virus twice before boarding the plane.
"But there is another danger that I would like to mention. The danger of forgetting that we are all human and we are all Ukrainian," Zelensky stated.
Ukraine's Minister of Health Zoryana Skaletska, in turn, announced that she would be joining the evacuees for the duration of the quarantine, running the Ministry by Skype.
