Former President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych was accused of treason

The State Bureau of Investigations, in agreement with the Prosecutor General's Office, issued the note of suspicion to former President of Ukraine Yanukovych as per Part 1 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine – Treason.

This was reported by the press service of the Prosecutor General's Office.

The fugitive president is suspected of treason due to signing the so-called Kharkiv Agreements, extending the presence of Russia's Black Sea Fleet in Ukraine for 25 years. The agreement was signed on April 21, 2010.

"Acting by prior agreement with the highest officials of the Russian Federation, in violation of the requirements of the Constitution of Ukraine and the Law of Ukraine "On International Treaties of Ukraine", undermining the sovereignty, territorial integrity and inviolability, defense capacity, state and economic security of Ukraine, he provided assistance to a foreign state - the Russian Federation and its representative, President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Medvedev - in the subversive activities against Ukraine," the statement of the Prosecutor General's Office read.

Yanukovych is accused of artificially creating a prerequisite for an increase in the number of Russian troops in Crimea, creating the conditions for their stay within the sovereign territory of Ukraine under the pretext of receiving a gas discount.

"At the same time, the agreement, as well as the contracts concluded for its implementation between JSC "NAC" Naftogaz of Ukraine" and JSC "Gazprom", actually did not provide any discount on the price of gas. Before the signing of the documents, the price for Ukraine was artificially overestimated twice by the Russian Federation: at the end of 2008, the gas price of 1,000 cubic meters for Ukraine was $179.5, while at the end of 2010 - 352.33 US dollars. In addition, the actual price decrease was an obligation of Ukraine due to ti its public debt to the Russian Federation, which was being repaid," the OGPU added.

As a result of the so-called Kharkiv Agreements signed by the ex-president, the military personnel and military equipment of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation was increased instead of preparing for their withdrawal from the territory of Ukraine. In 2014, it gave Russia the opportunity to annex the Crimean peninsula.

According to "Apostrophe", on January 21, the European Court of Human Rights decided on a number of cases concerning the Revolution of Dignity. The court accused Yanukovych and former authorities of violating human rights.
