Putin chose war: the West's reaction to Russia's invasion of Ukraine

The West, in particular NATO and Great Britain, reacted to Russia's military invasion of Ukraine.

United Kingdom

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said that Britain and its allies would respond to Putin's military aggression. Together with President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, he discussed further steps.

"President Putin has chosen a path of bloodshed and destruction by launching this unprovoked attack on Ukraine," Johnson said, adding that he was "stunned by the terrible events in Ukraine."

The British Foreign Ministry said that their country will help Ukraine in self-defense, despite the fact that Ukraine is not part of the Alliance.

European Union

The EU intends to impose sanctions against strategic sectors of the Russian economy.

According to the head of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, they plan to block Russia's access to basic technologies and markets.

The EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell made it clear that this would be a tough package of sanctions the world has never seen.

United States

U.S. President Joe Biden stated that Russia has chosen the path of the war with Ukraine. The States are to impose sanctions against one of the largest banks in the Russian Federation - Sberbank, namely, they prohibit currency transactions in this bank.

"The Ukrainian people suffer from an unprovoked and unjustified attack by the Russian armed forces," said the head of the White House.

Joe Biden holds Russia fully responsible for the consequences and emphasizes that their allies and partners will respond to Russia's armed aggression against Ukraine in a unified and decisive manner.

The U.S. President announced that in the near future he will announce new sanctions against the Russian Federation during his address to the nation.

"I will be monitoring the situation from the White House this evening and will continue to get regular updates from my national security team. Tomorrow, I will meet with my G7 counterparts in the morning and then speak to the American people to announce the further consequences the United States and our Allies and partners will impose on Russia for this needless act of aggression against Ukraine and global peace and security. We will also coordinate with our NATO Allies to ensure a strong, united response that deters any aggression against the Alliance. Tonight, Jill and I are praying for the brave and proud people of Ukraine," Biden said.

He assures that the world will call on Russia to take responsibility for its actions.

NATO

UN Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg, OSCE Chairman Zbigniew Rau, and OSCE Secretary General Helga Maria Schmid condemned Russia's military invasion of Ukraine and call on the Kremlin to immediately stop hostilities.

Stoltenberg considers these actions of the Russian Federation to be a serious violation of international law and a threat to Euro-Atlantic security.

" I strongly condemn Russia’s reckless and unprovoked attack on Ukraine, which puts at risk countless civilian lives. Once again, despite our repeated warnings and tireless efforts to engage in diplomacy, Russia has chosen the path of aggression against a sovereign and independent country. This is a grave breach of international law, and a serious threat to Euro-Atlantic security. I call on Russia to cease its military action immediately and respect Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity," the statement reads.

He expressed support for the Ukrainian people and said that NATO would do do all it takes to protect and defend all Allies.
