US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said that Ukrainian strikes on Russian refineries could affect global energy markets. In his opinion, it is more profitable for Ukraine to attack tactical and operational targets.
Bloomberg reports.
"Those attacks could have a knock-on effect in terms of the global energy situation. Ukraine is better served in going after tactical and operational targets that can directly influence the current fight," the Pentagon chief said during a meeting of the Senate Armed Services committee.
He also repeated the US administration's request to the Congress to approve additional military assistance to Ukraine. Austin noted that such assistance also provides jobs for American workers by increasing US defense production.
At the same time, Republican Senator Tom Cotton accused the US administration of discouraging effective Ukrainian action for political reasons.
