President of Latvia Edgars Rinkēvičs suggests that the process of negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the EU will be extremely difficult, but it is quite possible to start it in June 2024.
This is reported by the European Pravda.
"In the negotiations on Latvia's accession to the EU, there were areas in which discussions were opened and closed quickly, but there were also areas where the process was difficult. Ukraine's accession to the EU could mean relatively significant changes in the EU economy, including agriculture," Rinkēvičs said.
According to him, the issues of environmental requirements and reforming the state apparatus may also be difficult.
"EU membership also means quite a lot of responsibilities, and in a country that is currently at war, it is certainly not easy to carry out reform processes or transformation processes. So, I think that yes, we have to give a positive signal to Ukraine and Moldova in June that we are starting negotiations. Yes, we have to start talking about specific things, but we have to expect that this process will not be easy, because there will be many disputes, for example, about agriculture," Rinkēvičs said.
Earlier, we reported that Peace Summit for Ukraine will be held on June 15-16 in Switzerland.
