If a pro-Russian candidate fails to win the Moldovan elections, Russia and its agents intend to organize protests.
This is stated in a joint document of the governments of the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom.
"In defense of our shared democratic values, we are taking this step to warn our democratic partners and Allies that Russian actors are carrying out a plot to influence outcomes of Moldova's fall 2024 presidential election. They intend to incite protests in Moldova should a pro-Russia candidate not win," the statement reads.
It is noted that the Russian Federation is trying to form a negative attitude among Moldovan citizens towards Western governments, as well as towards their own government and its ability to integrate into the European Union.
In addition, the Russian side seeks to undermine the faith of the Moldovan population in the country's ability to secure itself and maintain rule of law.
"We have full confidence in Moldova’s ability to manage these threats linked to the Kremlin’s interference. We are taking a range of measures to support those efforts as part of our partnership with Moldova and its people," the governments said in a statement.
Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom have jointly shared information about Russia's plans with partners in Moldova so that they "can further investigate, thwart, and disrupt the Kremlin’s plans."
"We will continue to work closely with the Moldovan government on this," the statement added.
