Despite pro-Trump rioters storming the US Capitol, Congress has affirmed President-Elect Joe Biden’s victory, as was reported by CNN.
Both the Senate and the House of Representatives rejected objections and calls to discard Georgia and Pennsylvania’s electoral votes for Biden. The counting of Vermont's three electoral votes put Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris over the 270-threshold needed to win the presidency. Thus, Congress has just affirmed President-Elect Joe Biden's Electoral College victory over President Trump.
As the Electoral College results have been certified, Biden's inauguration shall proceed to take place on January 20, officially making Biden the 46th President of the United States.
Following a formal affirmation of President-Elect Joe Biden's Electoral College victory, President Trump said the decision "represents the end of the greatest first term in presidential history."
"Even though I totally disagree with the outcome of the election, and the facts bear me out, nevertheless there will be an orderly transition on January 20th," Trump said in a statement.
"I have always said we would continue our fight to ensure that only legal votes were counted. While this represents the end of the greatest first term in presidential history, it’s only the beginning of our fight to Make America Great Again," Trump said while repeating false claims about the election, practically inciting a mob to storm the Capitol.
Since Donald Trump has not yet conceded defeat, he may not be present at the inauguration of the new president.
Joe Biden received nearly 81.3 million votes against 74.2 million votes for Donald Trump. Biden has been able to gain support in many key states. According to the results of the Electoral College, 302 Electoral College members voted for Biden and 232 for Trump.
Earlier on Wednesday, pro-Trump rioters stormed the US Capitol. The joint session of Congress, which is normally a ceremonial step, was halted for several hours when rioters breached the Capitol. Proceedings resumed at about 8 p.m. ET with Vice President Mike Pence bringing the Senate session back into order.
"Let's get back to work," Pence said and soon announced Biden’s victory.
Donald Trump's social media accounts have been suspended until January 20.
