Stole about 200 million rubles: former governor of Kursk region Smirnov detained in Russia

In Russia, the former governor of the Kursk region, Alexei Smirnov, was detained as part of a case involving the alleged embezzlement of 200 million rubles from the 15 billion rubles allocated from the federal budget for the region's defense.

This is what Russian propaganda media is writing about.

"The former governor of the Kursk region, Smirnov, and his former first deputy, Dedov, have been detained," Russian media reported.

According to sources, the scheme was as follows: money was transferred to one-day firms that allegedly won fictitious tenders, after which artificial conditions were created for non-fulfillment of contracts, which were then terminated, and the firms disappeared with the advances.

According to the Mash public website, law enforcement officers came to the former landowner's home on the morning of April 16. According to media reports, the former CEO of the Kursk Region Development Corporation, Volodymyr Lukin, complained about him. He had previously been arrested in a case of embezzlement during the construction of fortifications in the region.

"Both Lukin and Smirnov are connected to the Ivanovo region. Previously, they could have participated in the embezzlement of state funds from the housing and communal services fund there," the report says.

As is known, on August 6, the Russian Defense Ministry stated that Ukrainians crossed the border in the Kursk region, "after which they were destroyed," although this turned out to be incorrect.

As "Apostrophe" wrote, the other day footage appeared on the Internet showing the breakthrough of the Ukrainian Armed Forces into the Belgorod region of the Russian Federation . These are soldiers of the 225th separate assault regiment (225th OSH).

As a reminder, President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that Ukrainian troops are on the territory of Russia not only in the Kursk region as of early April 2025.
