President of the Russian Academy of Arts Zurab Tsereteli dies

On Tuesday, April 22, it became known about the death of the monumental artist, sculptor, and president of the Russian Academy of Arts, Zurab Tsereteli.

This was reported in Russian media, citing the artist's assistant Sergei Shagulashvili.

"Yes, it happened today at half past one in the morning," the interlocutor said.

He also clarified that decisions about the farewell and funeral will be finalized later.

Zurab Tsereteli is a Soviet, Georgian and Russian monumental artist, president of the Russian Academy of Arts. He was born in 1934 in Tbilisi. He is the author of numerous works. His oeuvre includes over five thousand works of painting, graphics, sculpture, monumental and decorative art (frescoes, mosaics, panels).

He graduated from the painting faculty of the Tbilisi Academy of Arts, worked at the Institute of History, Archeology and Ethnography of the Academy of Sciences of Georgia. In 1964 he studied in France, where he communicated with prominent artists Pablo Picasso and Marc Chagall.

From the late 1960s he began to work actively in the field of monumental art. Since 1997 he has been the president of the Russian Academy of Arts.

On September 20, 2017, Tsereteli was added to the List of Persons Who Pose a Threat to the National Security of Ukraine.
