It is over 260 years old: what the oldest residential building in Kyiv looks like

The oldest house in Kyiv, built in the 18th century, is located at 7 Kontraktova Square. It still belongs to the Nechaev family, whose ancestor bought the house in the 19th century.

The Gazeta.ua told about the history of the house.

The first owner of the estate was a nobleman named Leontiy Vyshnevsky. He rebuilt the house and made the first floor stone. Thanks to this, it managed to survive the fire in Podil in 1811, when the fire destroyed thousands of houses and more than a dozen churches.

Maksym Nechaev bought this estate with access to Kontraktova Square in 1891. Back then, the famous Nechaev gingerbread cookies were made here and sold during the fairs at Kontraktova Square.

In 1931, the Soviet authorities shot two of Nechaev's sons. In total, eight family members were shot during the Soviet era, and one was killed in the battle of Kruty. With the outbreak of World War II, all the survivors returned to Kyiv.

In 1962, the house was nationalized, leaving the owners with only a room on the second floor. Five families moved in next door. After Perestroika, Maksym Nechaev's great-grandson returned the house to the family.

Today, the house has the status of an architectural monument and is protected by the state.
