What the legendary Golgotha looked like on St. Volodymyr's Hill in Kyiv: archival photos

One of the monuments of Kyiv's history in the early 20th century that has not survived to this day is the Panorama Golgotha, which was located near

St. Alexander's Cathedral on Volodymyrska Hill.

Vechirniy kyiv told about the history of the place.

At that time, artistic panoramas of religious themes were popular. In accordance with the trends of the time, in July 1901, the director of the Kyiv Art Salon, Ivan Zamaraev, received a plot of land to arrange a pavilion for art exhibitions.

The Viennese masters created an author's copy of the panorama "Crucifixion of Jesus". The canvas was 94 meters long and 13 meters wide. It weighed over 3200 kg.

The panorama was opened on January 10, 1902. It made a great impression on the people of Kyiv, and tickets were quickly sold out. In addition to Panorama Golgotha, other artists had the opportunity to exhibit their paintings in the pavilion.

The last tenant of the panorama was Mikhail Kalashnikov. He even managed to extend the lease in 1924 with the Soviet government, on the condition that Golgotha would not be used for anti-religious purposes. However, a year later the building was expropriated in favor of the state.

In 1934, the pavilion was dismantled, and the painting itself was torn up and moved to the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra's Assumption Cathedral. The composition was completely lost when the cathedral was blown up in November 1941.
