Beach, yachts, and a lot of vacationers: how the embankment in Kyiv looked like in the last century. Photo

Photos of the embankment and Trukhaniv Island in Kyiv in the 1930s and 1960s have been posted online.

The photos were published by the source "Spraga: it is interesting in Kyiv".

They show people walking along Kyiv's embankment, a large number of yachts and boats sailing along the Dnipro River, and a large number of vacationers on the beaches of Trukhaniv Island.

The construction of the Dnipro embankment began in 1934. It was designed by Vasyl Osmak. The project envisioned the construction of a three-kilometer-long embankment from Poshtova Square to the Eugenia Bosch Bridge (a bridge across the Dnipro that existed in 1925-1941). Between 1935 and 1938, a 1.3-kilometer-long section was arranged to strengthen the riverbank.

A twelve-meter wide pedestrian zone was created near the Dnipro for walking. A five-meter horizontal walking terrace with steps down to the Dnipro was built near the water.

The project of completing the embankment was revived after the end of World War II. The River Station was built on Poshtova Square (1957-1961) and the Dnipro Metro Station was constructed (1960).
