Iryna Venediktova became the new Prosecutor General of Ukraine. The Ukrainian parliament voted for her appointment on Tuesday, March 17.
In total, 269 deputies supported her candidacy.
Venediktova was personally presented to the Verkhovna Rada by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
During her speech, Venediktova said it is important to make informed and legal decisions so that the prosecutor's reform continues "without tilts" and not to return the "werewolves in the prosecutor's epaulets". She also thanked the president for his trust.
It is interesting that Venediktova became the first female prosecutor general in the history of independent Ukraine.
Iryna Venediktova, a 41-year-old lawyer, was born in Kharkiv. She graduated from the Kharkiv National University of Internal Affairs. She was an advisor in a number of law firms and served as an MP from the Servant of the People faction. In the snap parliamentary elections on July 21, 2019, she ran third on the Servant of the People party’s list.
In August 2019 - December 2019, she headed the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Legal Policy. On December 28, she became acting head of the National Bureau of Investigation.
On March 5, 2020, Rada expressed distrust to Prosecutor General Ruslan Ryaboshapka. 263 people's deputies voted for his resignation.
