European Commission supports "visa-free" traffic with Ukraine

The European Commission supports the agreement of Ukraine-EU Cargo Traffic Liberalization, that gives Ukrainian drivers the right to avoid getting permits for international traffic, the European Commission has said.

This was announced by European Commissar Adina Velian after the meeting of the Council of the European Union, writes Radio Liberty.

She noted that the idea of returning permits is unacceptable.

"This ping-pong between Ukraine and the European Commission is unfair. Meanwhile, people are suffering on the border, and our external borders of the European Union become hostages," - said Velian.

She also said that she plans to defend the EU-Ukraine agreement, which will last until June 2024, despite the demands of Poland's protesters.

"I am determined to defend this agreement, to continue to explain its benefits both for the European market and for Ukraine and Moldova. In fact, I hope that the authorities in member countries and on the front line will take their responsibility seriously," the official said.

At the same time, she supported the meeting of a joint committee initiated by Poland, where the problems of the Agreement should be discussed, but it's propper "after solving the critical situation on the border". Velian also criticized the Polish authorities for its delay.

"I think it is unacceptable for the government to "wash its hands" in Poland, saying that this is something between the local authorities and the European Commission and Ukraine. Being a central government we have nothing to do with this - our hands are tied. I don't think that's an acceptable explanation. On the other hand, I take into account the fact that Poland has had elections, it's in the process of forming a new majority now, and I'm looking forward to work with the next government to solve the problem as soon as possible," Adina Velian added.
