NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg is ready to offer Ukraine to become a full member of the Alliance at a "certain stage".
He said this on air on Fox News.
In particular, NATO Secretary-General discussed with journalists a possible confrontation between Russia and the Alliance if the bloc promotes full membership of Ukraine. Stoltenberg reminded that NATO was created to prevent a large-scale war.
In this context, he recalled the case of Norway, which also joined NATO. At the time, the Soviet Union called the accession of the northern country to the Alliance a provocation.
"It wasn't a provocation, it's the right of every sovereign nation to choose its path. Norway has this right, Sweden and Finland have it, as well as Ukraine," Stoltenberg emphasized and added that it is important to do everything possible to prevent Vladimir Putin from achieving what he wants in Ukraine, because it will be a certain signal for other authoritarian states.
The Alliance Secretary-General said that he was ready to offer Ukraine at a "certain stage" to become a full-fledged member of the Alliance. However, in this context, Stoltenberg didn't specify the terms of Kyiv's possible accession to the bloc. According to him, the US should continue to support Ukrainians, because it leads to the decrease of Russia's military potential.
"So it is a good thing for us, for the United States, to support Ukraine and also at some stage to invite them to become a full member of the Alliance," Stoltenberg summarized, commenting on the prospects of Ukraine's accession to NATO.
