President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky supports and contributes to Ukraine's withdrawal from the agreement on pursuing a coordinated monopoly policy of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).
According to the reports of the Presidential Office's press service, on November 23, the head of the state signed the law. Zelensky stated that the withdrawal from the CIS agreement will protect Ukrainian national and economic interests.
“There is a risk of economic and trade pressure on Ukraine, as the agreement originally contained certain mechanisms for the information exchange. Therefore, information received by the CIS members may be used for such pressure,” as was stated on the president's website.
The CIS treaty was signed on January 25, 2000, in Moscow and ratified by the Ukrainian parliament by the law of January 16, 2003. The decision to withdraw from the agreement was made by Ukrainian deputies on November 5, 2020.
It will be recalled that on August 19, the Government of Ukraine decided to withdraw from seven international agreements which were signed within the Commonwealth of Independent States.
