Scientists found the sunken ship SS Nemesis, missing more than 100 years ago, video

Australian scientists have solved the mystery of the steamship SS Nemesis, which disappeared without a trace in July 1904 while transporting coal from Newcastle to Melbourne.

IFLScience writes about this.

Researchers could not determine the location of the 73-meter-long vessel for more than a hundred years.

In 2022, remote sensor company Subsea Professional Marine Services came across the wreck 26 kilometers offshore while searching for lost cargo containers off the coast of Sydney.

Scientists plan to collect video footage of the sunken ship to create a 3D model of Nemesis in its current state.

"This discovery and confirmation of the wreck’s identity not only provides significant archaeological information about the ship and wrecking event but, more importantly, may offer some solace to the families and friends of those who perished onboard as it provides a location at which they can mourn their loved ones.", said senior naval archaeologist Brad Duncan.
