Ukrainian journalist, poet, prose writer, son of Ukrainian poet, prose writer and journalist Oleksandr Zyma, member of the National Union of Writers of Ukraine Vasyl Zyma admitted that he was outraged by the awarding of a Doctor of Philosophy degree in law to WBC, WBA, WBO and IBO heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk.
He wrote about this on his Facebook page.
"... I am sincerely happy for Oleksandr Usyk, who managed to box, teach graduate students, write monographs, participate in scientific conferences and publish in international scientific publications. An outstanding person. Like our, domestic science. This is world-class. It is a pity that they do not give the Nobel Prize in Philosophy, they could have nominated our nugget. Success in the scientific field. And if anyone thinks that in some case Usyk will not run for president, then I will disappoint you - he will. Don't worry. Without any doubts." - comments the poet.
He admits that he doesn't understand this: "But in our country, where corruption triumphs, anything is possible. My classmate, a lawyer who conducts trials in international courts and has worked as a lawyer for twenty years, says that he will apply to be an Honored Master of Sports. And what, he has muscles, he can jump on one leg. And that's enough."
Vasyl Zima indicates under what conditions a person acquires the scientific degree of Doctor of Sciences:
"... is acquired by a person at the scientific level of higher education on the basis of a Doctor of Philosophy degree, provided that original research is conducted, scientific results are obtained that provide a solution to an important theoretical or applied problem, have national or global significance and are published in scientific professional publications."
Among the conditions it mentions:
- Possession of a PhD degree or its equivalent;
- Having significant experience in scientific work and practical activities in your field;
- Preparation and defense of a doctoral dissertation;
- Availability of the required number and types of scientific publications;
- Active participation in scientific conferences, seminars and symposiums, as well as scientific guidance of young scientists and postgraduate students;
- The practical significance of research results;
- Successfully passing the certification before an expert committee.
Zima also writes that confirmation of the applicant's significant personal contribution to ensuring the development of the field of science in which the dissertation was prepared can be:
- the presence of three patents for invention that have passed a qualification examination and relate to the scientific results of the doctoral dissertation;
- having at least three publications on the topic of the doctoral dissertation in publications classified as first, second quartiles (Q1, Q2) according to the SCImago Journal and Country Rank or Journal Citation Reports classification;
- awarding state awards (prizes) of Ukraine or other states for the scientific results obtained by the applicant, reflected in his doctoral dissertation.
Ukrainian lawyer, former member of the Central Election Commission Andriy Magera shared the post of journalist Zyma. In the comments, former member of the Central Election Commission of Ukraine, associate professor at the National University "Kyiv-Mohyla Academy", employee of the National Agency for Quality Assurance in Higher Education Leontiy Shipilov decided to explain:
"Andriy Magera, the post quotes short stories from the Procedure for Awarding and Depriving the Degree of Doctor of Sciences, there are completely different requirements for a Doctor of Philosophy, and the author is under the delusion that we still only have candidates and doctors of sciences."
As previously reported by "Apostrophe", the academic council of the Kharkiv National University of Internal Affairs awarded Oleksandr Usyk the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the field of knowledge "Law".
