Invasion of Ukraine and NATO membership: US statements following the negotiations with Russia

On Monday, January 10, negotiations between the United States and Russia were held in Geneva. Delegations from the United States and Russia have concluded eight hours of talks as part of what is expected to be a week of high-stakes diplomacy prompted by Moscow's demands for a security deal and its threatening military buildup near Ukraine.

During the briefing on the U.S.-Russia Strategic Stability Dialogue, Ms. Sherman pointed out the following:

- The U.S. is ready to impose sanctions against key financial institutions, tighten export controls, and help allies;

- de-escalation in Europe depends on Russia;

- The United States and Russia are not yet ready to discuss specific security agreements. Currently, the parties are trying to understand each other better;

- the discussion with Russia the number of American troops in Europe is not on the agenda;

- The U.S. would welcome genuine progress in diplomatic negotiations with Russia, progress is possible;

- The U.S. will not allow anyone to close NATO's door to any country;

- The United States is interested in negotiations with the Russian Federation on strategic and tactical weapons, missiles in Europe, transparency, the scale of military exercises;

- in the coming days, the U.S. will hold discussions with European partners following the negotiations.

The situation in Kazakhstan was not discussed during the negotiations.
