Party of Putin's Slovak friend loses elections to the European Parliament

The party of Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico lost the European Parliament elections to the opposition party Progressive Slovakia.

This was reported by The Slovak Spectator.

"Progressive Slovakia (PS), a leading pro-European opposition force led by former European Parliament deputy chair Michal Šimečka, won its second victory in the Slovak European elections," the report says.

According to the Commission for Elections and Control of Financing of Political Parties, the opposition Progressive Slovakia won 27.81% of the vote and became the winner of the race.

Fico's Smer-SD party came in second with 24.76% of the vote.

Nevertheless, the results of the European elections were successful for both PS and Smer-SD: each party obtained two more seats with votes.

PS will have six deputies in the new European Parliament, and Smer will have five.
