The center of Kyiv in ruins: how Maidan Nezalezhnosti looked like after World War II. Photo.

The network mentioned how Maidan Nezalezhnosti looked like during and after the Second World War - there were ruins in the center of Kyiv.

The Facebook community Club of Native Kyivan showed how the main square of Ukraine looked like after World War II.

In 1935, the square was renamed in honor of one of the Soviet party leaders, Mikhail Kalinin.

During the Nazi occupation of 1941-1943, Khreshchatyk and part of the square turned into complete ruins. During the retreat, Soviet troops mined the buildings of the main street, the mines went off on September 24, 1941, and a giant fire broke out that lasted several days and destroyed almost the entire odd-numbered side and blocks of the even-numbered side from the central square to the Central Department Store.
