Prime Minister of Slovakia undergoes surgery after assassination attempt: what doctors say about his condition

On Wednesday, May 15, 2024, Slovakia's Prime Minister was attacked. Robert Fico was seriously wounded as a result of close-range gunfire and has already undergone surgery.

This was reported by BBC Newshour.

Deputy Prime Minister of Slovakia Tomas Taraba said that he believes that the PM will be fine and that he is no longer in a life threatening situation. Taraba said the following:

"I was very shocked ... fortunately as far as I know the operation went well - and I guess in the end he will survive ... he's not in a life threatening situation at this moment."

The Deputy Prime Minister of Slovakia also added that the shooting, which was carried out by an elderly man, took place ‘at very close range’.

Tomas Taraba commented as follows: "He was heavily injured - one bullet went though the stomach and the second one hit the joint - immediately he was transported to the hospital and then to the operation."
