The researchers from Finland have discovered a new type of cat with a unique coat color. They named the new species salmiak, or salty liquorice.

The fur on the back of these animals starts with one color at the top, for example, black, and gradually becomes white closer to the tip of the tail. According to scientists, this unique color is the result of a mutation.
Cats with this color were first spotted in 2007 in Central Finland. In addition to the unusual pattern on their backs, almost all of the cats had white or almost white tails, and their eyes were either yellow or green. The article notes that the shades of Salmiaks' fur could be black, brown, and tortoiseshell.
Previously, it was believed that such cats could be infertile. However, the concerns were not confirmed: Salmiak cats give birth to healthy kittens. And DNA analysis did not show any genetic mutations associated with white fur.
